Two kinds of society

The poem is an imaginative vision of two kinds of society, each a pitted against one another...what are these two kinds of society?

The characters in Beowulf are all functionaries playing out their roles as long as wyrd permits, not images of real people but exemplars of all human types. Knowing this, how is the society of Herot representative of "generosity, loyalty, and love"?

what's more important for warriors following comitatus, worrying about showing fear and being disloyal or dying? Why?

  1. 1) warrior and human society

    2) Herot represents generosity, loyalty, and love by giving Beowulf a great funeral after his death. They stayed loyal to the king and the men who went with Beowulf to fight they believed in him. Love by showing Beowulf their respect for saving their lives defeating the bad guys.

    3) According to comitatus, showing fear would be disloyal because comitatus is a way of being loyal to the ruler and a brotherhood bond. Where they are there for each other till the end.

    1. Great answers to 2 and 3 Vivian, but you are missing the description for one. You're right; warrior and "regular Joe" human society in Anglo-Saxon era are the two societies, but it's also about the human element being generous, loyal and loving while the Grendel society of monsters is dark, hated and destructive. These two societies represent good and evil. The author showcases that through Christianity, we can always better ourselves. Narrator is neutral.

  2. 1) In my opinion, the two societies that clash in Beowulf are that of the human civilization, and the unnatural, mystic world, such of which includes evil things like Grendel, sea monsters, and dragons.

    2) We see generosity from Herot by how Beowulf is freely allowed to enter Herot, despite being of a different land. Loyalty is shown by how warriors were with Hrothgar despite the possible attack by Grendel. Both Hrothgar and his wife represent love by the fact that the wife plays a good part in Hrothgar's affairs.

    3) Comitatus is the idea that a warrior is loyal to his leader with the understanding of compensation for loyalty through a share in plundered goods, as well as the needs of the warriors. A warrior who follows comitatus would believe that dying a honorable death is better that abandoning his leader. Disloyalty is not a attribute of a warrior following comitatus.

    1. Good thoughts regarding Comitatus. Herot would represent generosity by the gifts given, the good nature of Wealthow and the funeral arrangements made by Beowulf's men after his death. See response to Vivian's post for number one.

1)the strong warriors and the not so strong humans

2)genorosity-lots of wonderful treasure, loyatly-all of beowulfs men stayed with him for most the time until he tried to fight the dragon, love-because of how all the danes treated beowulf after he killed grendel.

3)for the comitatus the men felt that being disloyal was a huge importance because they have always been with beowulf, so it was of more importance

  4. 1. The two societies portrayed in Beowulf are the prominant human races and the outcasted misunderstood creatures that are the spawn of Cain.

    2. Hrothgar doesn't abandon his people, he cares about them and loves them to the point were he accepts outside help to save his hall and people. He is loyal to his people to the point where he won't abandon them and his people won't abandon his either. Also Herot is a hall that welcomes people from other places and offers them help as we see the scenerio when Hrothgar tells Beowulf how he helped his father. This shows the hall of Herot as a place of generosity (helping Beowulf's dad), Loyalty (Hrothgar's men not leaving), and love (Hrothgar accepting outside help)

    3. Comitatus is defined as "a body of companions, esp. a military retinue with its leader"(Dictionary.com). Meaning that the men worry more about showing fear and being disloyal because then they would be letting down their leader. They would much rather die and be couragous then to live as a coward. In a society where heros are praised you can't afford to be a coward in any situation because people will call you out on it. Stories and reputaion hold a lot of power in this type of society so having a bad reputation of being a coward would follow you for the rest of your life untill you did an over the top adventure or killed evil thingy that recking havoc.

  5. 1) The two societies that are pitted up against each other are the society of the heroic warrior and the society of the average human.

    2) Herot is representative of generosity because they openly take in Beowulf, feed him, and support him in all of his decisions. Herot is representative of loyalty because, the soldiers of Hrothgar stay with him through all of the hardships that they live through (Grendal). They represent love by showering Beowulf with all of the love and glory he could dream of after he defeats Grendal.

    3) For warriors that are following comitatus, worrying about showing fear and being disloyal is much more of a concern for them. Because the number one thing that is important to a warrior of comitatus is two stay loyal to their lord and stay with him through anything.

    1. see above responses for number 1. Your societies are partially correct, but it's more about good vs. evil.

  6. 1) The two different kinds of society would be good vs. evil; or humans vs. evil beings.

    2) I think Herot represents genorsity by the King allowing Beowulf coming into their land and home and such a sacred place to them with such open arms and giving Beowulf and his warriors a feast before their fight against Grendel. It shows loyallty by the warriors keeping by Hrothgars side during the early attacks of Grendel and trying to stand up to him before they fled Herot. Love is shown through how they respected Beowulf after he had defeated Grendel.

3)Comitatus is extremely important to warriors. It is worse to abandon your leader or fellow brothers in your clan. They believe that loyallty is most important to them and would much rather die then to leave someone behind or show fear to others.

  7. 1. Beowulf presents two types of society. The supernatural society where the characters have supernatural strength like Beowulf and Grendel. And the traditional society with regular humans who have no supernatural powers or strength.

2.I feel the people of Herot show generosity by the compassion, time and encouragement they gave to Beowulf right from the beginnning. Loyalty was obviously seen with the warriors who didn't leave Beowulf untill they saw that fate was not on their side. Love is definitely seen after Beowulf defeats Grendel, the people of Herot celebrate Beowulfs courage and victory.

3.Comitatus, I feel, would say that showing fear or being disloyal is definitely unacceptable. They share a bond between each other and the only way out should be victory or death, not running away.

    1. Actually the two societies are more simple. Beowulf belongs to the society of all humans that represent love, generosity and loyalty whereas Grendel and the dragon represent the society of darkness, hatred and antireligion.

  8. 1.) natural people and the supernatural
2.) Herot represents generosity because he supports Beowulf and they receive him well even though he is from another land. Loyalty is shown by the warriors of Hrothgars because he sticks with Beowulf and they help him defeat Grendel. Love is shown by how the people were happy with Beowulf after he defeated Grendel.

3.)Comitatus is that a warrior is loyal to his leader. So I think that warriors following comitatus are more worried about being disloyal because Comitatus is about being loyal to their leader. And they would do anything to help out there leader and

  9. 1.Human and evil monster.

2.The society of Herot is representative of generosity and loyalty ,because when beowulf came to herot, the king welcomed beowulf and his man they also fead them and gave them shelter.herot also gave beowulf loyalty by the man who went with beowolf when he defeated Grendel.

3.I think that being loyal to its king was really inportant because he cared for his people and fight untill the end with your leader for loyalty.

  10. 1) The two types of societies are the diplomatic society (the people who do not use force themselves to be respected) and the ones who do use fighting to be respected.

2)Herot is representative of generosity because Beowulf won treasures for his people and won the dragon's treasure even though it cost him his life. It represents loyalty because Wiglaf stayed loyal to Beowulf even though there was a good chance that he could die while helping him slay the dragon. And Herot is also representative of love because Beowulf loved his glory and fame so much it caused him to make rash decisions.

3)To the Anglo-Saxon society, it was more important to follow Comitatous because that's what was considered heroic at the time.

  11. 1. The two types of society are natral humans who do not have super natrual powers and the supernatural humans.

    2. Generosity by welcoming beowulf. Loyalty by the men stayed with him. Love because of the gloy he got from everyone showing that they loved him.

    3. Comitotis is important to them because it was considered heroic

  12. 1. The two types of society are ordinary human beings and those that go above and beyond to look out for the safety of others, usually possessing supernatural abilities.

    2. Loyalty is expressed in the society of Herot because of Beowulf's followers. These people love and praise Beowulf. Hrothgar demonstrates generosity by offering Beowulf treasures for killing Grendel.

    3. Comitatus is where someone shows loyalty and no fear. To live up to this standard, there isn't room to fear death.

  13. 1. The two types of society would probably have to be the super natural vs. your average human. This is because there are many evil creatures and monsters that are in beowulf and are super natural. Then you have the average humans on the other hand that go through struggles with them.

    2. Herot is very generous place because they let beowulf come to their land and basically live with them. They showed love because they all looked up to him as a hero because of his courage. The people were very kind to feed him and give beowulf gifts.

    3. Comitatus says that one must show no fear and show all loyalty to their leader. A warrior that follows his leader and dies a noble death rather then abandon his leader is showing true honor to the rule of comitatus.

  14. 1. The two societies are that of realism vs romanticism. i believe that the notion of Beowulf going and defeating Grendel, his mother and the dragon in such an epic way shows a romantic view of what we as humans wish we could do. On the other hand, the rest of society is looking and watching as normal people and being protected by Beowulf. These people are normal and this is the more realistic society.

    2. Loyalty is shown by the men following Beowulf into battle. Love is seen by the people toward Beowulf after he saves them from the monsters. Generosity is seen from how Hrothgar treats Beowulf after he succeeds and slays the monsters in how he gives him many treasures.

    3. i believe to all warriors following comitatus is the most important thing while staying loyal. But in the story the "real" people who originally follow Beowulf are eventually too scared and yet Beowulf still has the courage to follow that code of honor, which goes to show the difference between realistic people and an epic hero.

    1. There are two types of society there’s normal human beings and individuals that go ahead of and exceed to watch the others for protection, they have unbelievable powers or super powers.

      2. Loyalty is spoken in the society of Herot because of Beowulf's followers, they sing and praise his name like he’s there god. Beowulf followers adore him. Hrothgar shows generosity by offering Beowulf treasures for killing Grendel and in the movie he offers the kingdom to him and then commits suicide.

      3. Comitatus is a brave loyal person that will go through torturous and fearful experience and to be considered a hero

  15. 1) The two worlds in Beowulf are the regular human world and the dark world of the monsters born of cain.

    2) Herot is full of generosity, loyalty, and love. The Generosity comes from that fact that Herot is open to all people. Loyalty from the soldiers that are willing to die to protect it. Love comes from all of the merry making that is done in Herot, all the connoctions made by everyone.

    3) It is much more important for soldiers to show bravery than to live. Occording to Comitatus, a cowardly soldier is no soldier at all.

  16. 1)Beaowulf shows the struggle of two kinds of society, those societies are good shown by Beowulf and his men versus evil shown by Grendel.

2)Herot shows the characteristics of generosity when they offer Beowulf gold for killing Grendel as well as making him their king. Herot shows loyalty with the men that support Beowulf as well as being loyal to him for 50 years as king. They show love with their admiration and respect for Beowulf's heroic deads.

    3) For warriors of this time Comitatus is the most important thing because it is their code of honer. Without their honor in this time the men have nothing.

  17. 1)the two worlds in my opinion are the human or natural world show by the men and Beowulf and the mystic or unnatural/ supernatural world shown by Grendel

    2) Herot shows generosity by allowing Beowulf to enter there land freely, and by offering gold to Beowulf, They show love through there respect and thankfulness for what Beowulf has done, Loyalty is shown by the soldiers when Beowulf fights Grendel and they are also loyal to him while he is king.

    3) it is more important for men and soldiers to follow comitatus, because people rely on you and it is the way they are expected to act.

  18. God, I made answer 1 th-gh 3, and I accidently hit backspace, I want to bite my self.

    1. There are two kinds of societies in the Beowulf, and It's closely associated with Beowulf's role. One is the attitude toward to outside of their society. Outside can be foreign country, evil bandit, or monster. Beowulf and his fellas cleary showed the beauty of being a warrior.
Other one is inside of their society. Beowulf had to be the perfect role model of their society. so even he plays like jerk and beating up monster without weapon(over pride), when he need to play a role of king. he's a generous and wise king. those two faces are actually extremly hard to be in one person. but that is what society wnated. wise and generous inside of Herot, brave and strong in battle field.

    2. Generosity and loyalty; they're come up together in Herot society. Beowulf fully loyal to Hrothgar, and soldiers were loyal to Beowulf through the trail of beating Grendel. in the common sense, generosity can provide loyalty from their soldiers and loyalty toward their king made generous king. without super humanity, actually Hrothgar could described as best example of king. he's generous, and not afraid to reward his soldiers. so does love. as long as Beowulf take a good role of warrior and king, he is beloved by his civilian and soldiers.

  19. 3. as long as king reward and take care of their family, warriores must be loyal to king. but picture yourself as a warrior in Herot. not the everyone is natural born fighter like Beowulf. They can get scared sometimes, they need to be smart sometimes. being loyal would be part of comitatus, but what I truly felt was, worrying about showing fear is really important. If you get scared, then I'm sure other warriors got scared too. they're fighters, however everybody was baby too. If you show up your fear, that will effect to others. For other people who frightened about get kill by enemy. everyone need to worry about showing the fear and disloyalty. When they hide their feeling and pretend they're not scared of death, then they'll forget what're they afraid of, and they can be as brave as Beowulf in army. even if they're whimp as a individual.

  20. 1) I see the two different societies as the natural human society of kings and soldiers, up against the super natural society of monsters and other creatures.
    2) Herot is very generous to Beowulf by accepting the foreigner into their domain and allowing him to speak his mind, and consume their food and wine. Loyalty is expressed by the men who remain at Beowulf's side in battle, all the way until the end. Love is expressed by Hrothgar's wife through her ability to be with him through all of the evil that has be-found them.
    3) A warrior who follows comitatus would rather die than break the code. They would much sooner die an honorable death than dessert their leader in battle. Disloyalty is highly shameful.
