Beowulf begins!

After reading the first five sections of the poem, respond to these questions. Notes are allowed.

1. The opening passages of "Beowulf" reference family lineage as it is clearly central to the poem. Find two examples of how the characters reference either ancestry or identity of family within the first five sections. Why might family history play such a vital role?

2. How has Grendel already begun to emerge as the archetypal monster in "Beowulf"? What characteristics does he exude to link him to this title?

3. Look at the religious references in Beowulf--what are the names for God? What biblical events are mentioned, and who mentions them?

26 comments:

  1. 1) Wulfgar says to Beowulf "My lord [...] commands me to tell you that he knows of your noble birth..." (lines 127-128). Noble birth means that Beowulf should be respected. Informing Beowulf that Hrothgar knows of his noble blood, he tells him that Beowulf will be respected. When Beowulf greets Hrothgar, he says that "Higlac is my cousin and my king" (line 142). By mentioning that he is related to noble blood even though Hrothgar already knows he is, it shows that Beowulf is proud of his lineage and expects people to know it and respect him.

    2) Grendel represents evil, and has slayed all that have tried to stop him, making him an archetypal monster. Grendel doesn't have the characteristic of being unknown. People tend to fear things that they know nothing about more than things they know at least a little about. Grendel is already well known across the land because of the things he has done to the Danes.

    3) In Beowulf, God was named as the "the Almighty", "He", and "the Lord". The biblical events that are mentioned are Adam and Eve, Cain, Abel, and the creation of Earth. All of them were mentioned first by the narrator.

  2. 1. Example 1 "Higlac is my cousin" -line 143
Example 2 "Hergar my older brother" -line 201
Family history is important in establishing Beowulf as an epic hero. One of the ways an epic hero was the hero came from noble birth.

    2. The first few lines introduce him as the monster. This continues as it is explained he has been banished by god. An example of this title is his hatred for mankind and that he seemly is not not bothered by killing groups of thirty men.

    3. God is called the "almighty" -Line 23, "god", -Line 84 "the lord of heaven and earth" - Lines 96&97 "Our Father" -Line 103. One biblical event mentioned is the story of Cain and Able mentioned by the narrator in the first passage. The concept heaven and hell is used throughout the first passages as well as the devil.

  3. In line 104 it talks about Healfdane's son and speaks about his sorrow, pain and agony. Also in line 143 Beowolf says that Higlac is his cousin and he is his king. These references to family are to show people of power and set them out from the rest of the story any main characters. In many lines they pair the monster Grendel with swamps, marshes and other dark and miserable places to give him the sense of darkness and evil that he is. In line 23 the narration said God when saying Grendel was banished by him later in that line uses the phrase "The Almighty" still speaking about the banishment of Grendel. IN line 95-96 narration speaks of "the Lord of Heaven and Earth". There are many uses of the word God int this also.

  4. 1. Beowulf when introduced talked about his relation to Higlac, his cousin. Beowulf also talks about his father. Hrothgar talks about how his older had died, and may have been better leader than Hrothgar. Family history is important to establish ones’ royal past, without knowledge of royal ancestry one is of no status.
    2. He has killed many people, and has a hatred of all people. He was born from the children of Cain, very evil indeed. He also has a protagonist trying to stop him, a classic aspect of a monster.
    3. God is called the Almighty one, and just God. The story of Cain and Able is mentioned, and in general there is a lot of talk about heaven and hell. The narrator is the one mentions religion.

  5. 1- Beowulf is often referred to as "Higlac's Follower". Higlac is Beowulf's cousin and king. Knowing that Beowulf is of noble birth comes as reassurance of being able to fit the "hero" type to hrothgar. Another example is when Hrothgar is referring to the favor he did for Beowulf's father years before. By referencing Beowulf's father and showing that the two kingdoms have a connection through the favor it shows that beowulf is almost bound to help Hrothgar.

2- Many times does the author refer to Grendel as a descendant of Cain. Cursed by god to be banished and roam the earth damned. The way he devours men senselessly and without thought. The hate in his heart for all man kind. Section 2 line 79 " So mankind's enemy continued his crimes, killing as often as he could, coming alone, bloodthirsty and horrible. " It sets the picture of how gruesome Grendel is towards man and his utter hate towards them.

3- God is referred to as the Almighty, Lord etc. In the Section 1 the poets are singing songs and rejoicing of God and his creation of the Earth and the land they live on, then from there in the same section when speaking on grendel, The biblical reference of Cain from Cain and Able is clearly stated, saying that Grendel and all the bad things of earth are spawned from Cain and his murderous heart.

  6. 1)A. "Hail,Hrothgar!.Hilgacs is my cousin-line 142
    B. "Herger, my older brother, a far better man"-line 201
    C. shows that beowulf is of noble birth and how he is helping family

2)he was called the powerful monster and living in darknes, demon, he hauntend our moors. he killed 30 men while they were sleeping.

    3) "Almighty"-line 3, "god" line 102. the biblical event was about cain and abel. narrative told it

  7. 1. Example one is on line 191, and king Hrothgar talks about how how beowulf came to the court in friendship because his father was welcome there and well respected in there court. The family history also plays a big role because in pasts lots of people were known by there parents and their success so they get the reputation of them and they want to get a good legacy as a well respected or good person.

    2. He has become a big archetype because of his destruction and terror he has left to these people and all the humans he has already killed it presents him as a evil character and a bad guy in this poem that is obviously against the hero we know as Beowulf. They describe him as a big scary monster that is capable of killing many people at once.

    3. Basically the murder of Abel from Cain is showing that he is evil just like Grendel and is very evil. God is mentioned as a father in a couple of lines to show that he is good and from heaven above.

  8. 1. At the very beginning of section 4 starting on lines 27 through 41 Wulfgar addresses the sailors that have just arrived and talks about their noble birth. Again in section 3 Beowulf is introduced as Higlac's follower and the strongest of the Geats. I believe family is very important in this epic because this seems to have occurred during a time when the feudal system was in place. The feudal system was very beneficial to the very few who were born of nobility and harsh to the large majority of people that are not of nobility. Pointing out that Beowulf is of nobility and talking about his Geat ancestry is a way of showing that he is an elite.

    2. Grendel has already emerged as the symbolical monster of this epic when at the beginning on line 16 he is introduced as a monster and a fiend and it also talks about how he terrorizes the people and how he lives in a "hell". The reference to Cain and Abel also shows that he is considered the "bad guy" and makes way for a character such as Beowulf to kill him. These descriptions make him a "stereotypical" monster in an epic.

    3. The murder of Abel by Cain is mentioned in the beginning of the story as a way of saying that Grendel is from Cain and shows that he is evil. On line 103 there is a mention of God as "Father" and on line 96-97 God is mentioned as "Lord of Heaven and Earth".

  9. 1)One reference to ancestry is when Beowulf introduces himself to Hrothgar and makes the comment saying that he is the cousin of Higlac; another example is when nearly every character is introduced as a son of another person in their ancestry. This is a big issue because who they are related to give the character a sense of identity and allows them to find their place in the world and know who they are. It also allows him to take pride in who he is and makes him feel worthy for the adventure to come.

2)He has been killing innocent men and he has been eating them; he gain pleasure from inflicting pain on others. He has no remorse and is only focused on killing and feeding off good men, he has no sorrow for what he has done. It also mentions that he was spawned and that he is made of demons and all other evil entities. They call him the very son of Cain depicting him as one of the most evil things in existence.

3)In the book they reference him as the almighty one, the maker, and also call him plainly God. One example of when people in the book talk about the story of Cain and Abel and the narrator is using this story to explain where Grendal originated from; they also talk about heaven and hell and where all these evil and righteous things come from.

  10. 1. example 1 "Higlac is my cousin" 143
example 2 "Hergar my older brother" 200-201
family history is a vital role because it shows he is a epic hero. he is of noble birth.

2.lines 21-229 saying " murderous creatures banished by god, his evil ways, it also says his hatred of mankind, killing thirty men in one night. also the first lines of the poem are also an alright description.

    3. god is referenced as "god" -line 22, "almighty" -line 23, "lord of heaven and earth" -line 96-97, "Our Father" -line 103 they make biblical references to heaven and hell, and the devil used throughout the first couple passages, Cain and Able mentioned by the narrator,

  11. 1. (1st Line 104-105) This line mentions "healfdane's son", which is Hrothgar.
(2nd Line 109-110) This line mentions Higlac's follower.
I think the reason that family lineage is given to allow others to recognize the individual's reputation and status. It may inform others that this individual is related to a famous, or infamous person.

    2. We see in the first part of the poem that Grendel came from a brood of things that came from Cane, the biblical individual whom killed Abel. It says that these formed due to God's curse on Cane. Most individuals who may have read this would recognize that anything that God curses must be evil, and because Grendel basically spawned from Cane, he must also be evil. A monster archetype would no doubt have the task of carrying out tasks that would be considered evil. Some actions that may be considered evil that Grendel has carried out include: Murdering innocent individuals that were asleep; senseless murdering of individuals without a means of stopping the attack (Lines 66-71). Grendel has also been described as being a "shadow of death", that hunts in the darkness (Line 74). Also, in line 1 the poem states Grendel as a monster.

    3. Beowulf names God in multiple different manners, they include: God, The Almighty (Line 23). The biblical reference that is described is the story of Cane and Abel. The story basically is that Cane is jealous of Abel and kills him, and then God curses Cane. The poem then takes it out of the biblical realm and says that all evil brood came from Cane.

  12. 1. When the king of the Dannes gets mentioned as Hrothgar son of Healfdane, and Beowulf is also known as son of.................... Family traits have had lots to do with people's background. Back then, depending on ancestor's background and reputation, was the reputation everyone else would look at you with.

    2. Grendel's hate towards men raise, towards God, for having vanished all the monsters from the men's

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1.In line 104, Hrothgar is referenced to as Healfdane's son, and in line 109, Beowulf is referenced to as Higlac's Follower. I think this is because the hero's have a strong sense of pride, and their fathers before them were prideful men, as well. Farther into the story, Hrothgar mentions helping Beowulf's father in a time of need, and Beowulf coming to Hrothgar in his time of need is a form of repayment for helping Higlac.
    2. The narrator says that Grendel was born of Cain, and that him and thousands of other monsters were spawned from the bitterness and exiled by God. The monsters in old stories are typically exiled by a god or gods and banished from being near humanity, but when they break free or they venture into society, they cause destruction and horror over that society. They kill in brutal ways and typically leave no one alive.
    3. They call God the Almighty, God, the Lord of Heaven and Earth and Lord Almighty. The narrator references Cain, in murdering Abel. Also, Grendel would not touch Hrothgar's throne because it was protected by God and Grendel would never know of God's love so he could not touch it. God is Almighty and he rules over evil.

  14. 1. In line 104 Hrothgar is referred to as "Healfdane's son" and on line 110 Beowulf is referred to as "Higlac's follower". Family history plays an important role because that's what you are known for. If you are not well known or someone you know is "Famous" you say their name and your relationship to them. It gives you a sense of superiority because they may not know you but they know the person who's name you're associated with. It's a title you carry until you make one of your own to be remembered by.
2.Grendel kills because he finds joy in it. Also he has been banned by The Almighty and has been associated with hell so godly powers are at play making it a good versus evil type of ordeal. Son of Cain which makes him evil by birth.
    3. The names of god are The Almighty, God, the Lord Of Heaven and Earth, and the Lord Almighty. The story of the murderer Cain and his brother Abel and how God punished Cain's Children told by the story teller. Also how the Hrothgar's throne is protected by God, shows that God is almighty and that he can protect whom he chooses and has the power to do so.

  15. 1.)Hrothgar is telling Beowulf that his father found a reception at there court. And that Beowulf went to visit them because of the friendship his father and him have. It plays a role because Beowulf s father went to save them once and now Beowulf is going to save them.
2.) Grendel is seen as an evil monster that everyone is scared of. It says that she is seeking no peace and offering no truce and not accepting no settlement.
3.) The lord of heaven of earth. Lord and protector of the noble place. the biblical event is when Beowulf says that " God must decide who will be given to death's cold grip.

  16. 1. Beowulf's uncle is feudal lord. archetypical heroes are used to noble, or have high social positoin in the story. Beauty of warrior would be royalty for king.

    2. he is monstrous opponent of Beowulf.

    3. lord of heaven and earth. Cain and Abel' story is one of the biblical happen. narrator mentioned it.

  18. 1. (line 104) "Healfdane's son" is Hrothgar
(line 110) "Higlac's follower" is Beowulf, and Higlac is Beowulf's uncle
Family history is important because it explains how each character is connected and helps predict or show if they are royalty, unaturally powerful, or evil

    2. Well, an obvious reason is that the first section of the poem is, The Monster Grendel. He is described as a powerful monster in line 1 and is constantly associated with evil. Beowulf said he would travel across the sea to defeat Grendel so they are instantly assumed to be hero and monster right away. Grendel was conceived by monsters born of Cain (the first murderer)and killed 30 warriors in their sleep himself. He has a never ending blood lust and he kills for the fun of it

    3. (line 23) "The Almighty"
(line 96-97) "Lord of Heaven and Earth"
    (line 103) "Our Father"
The story of Cain and Able comes stright from the bible, they use the same main points as well. Cain is the first murderer and all of his "children" are evil cretures/monsters. Hrothgar's throne is protected by god and they say it very directly. The narrator uses many religious references and he even has beowulf himself talk about god.

    2. Grendel in the story is known to be the antagonist in the story. He is fear by mostly everyone in the story. Grendel is a monster living underwater in a cave with his mother.a He has no regrets ex: he killed 30 men at one point of the story.
3:God is called the "almighty" in line 23 and "god", in line 84. "Lord of Heaven and Earth" in line 96. A biblical event in the story that was mentioned was Cain and Able that was mention by the narrator in the first passage. this is Roble Jama

  21. 1. In section one, it references ancestry by saying "..Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished..." (lines 19-23).
In line 142, it says "Higlac is my cousin.."

    2. He is a known monster that has killed many people. In line 50, it says "Grendel came again, so set on murder that no crime could ever be enough, no savage assault quench his lust for evil." I think that wraps up his state of mind and intentions in a nutshell.

    3. In the beginning, there is a reference to Cain and Abel. It also references "The Almighty" (line 23), and "My Lord, the great king of the Danes" (line 127).

  22. 1. Hrothgar talked about relationships about him(cousin Higlac), and their family, also, dialougue of Hrothgar refered they're close and believe each other fairy well enough to asking for help. Hrothgar tell him, once upon a time Beowulf's dad owe him once. I don't know what kind of deal or favor was going on between Beowulf's father and Hrothgar, but I'm sure Hrothgar want him do give hime a favor back from his father.

    2. All the evil man and monsters are came from one man, who is Cane. The man of envyous that kill his own brother, Abel.
Grendel is blood of Cane. He is cursed, he just hate everything with bless of god, of course got hate him. it makes a good contrast with Beowulf, who is beloved to god.
in that point, Grendel is arche typical evil enemy.

    3.

  23. 3. name of god refered as "lord" or "He". who mentioned the name in the poem? that's narrator (Bard?skald?) and important biblical events in poem was Cane&Abel, also 'lord of heaven and earth' is important passage of god.

  24. 1) In lines 104-105 it is written "Healfdane's son", referring to Hrothgar.
Then in Lines 109-110 its is written "Higlac's Follower", referring to Beowulf.
I think it plays such a vital role because a person in those times best established credibility through those who he associated himself with. Especially in an instance of a father and son, where the son's qualities are usually reflective of his fathers. So stating relationships like being blood to, being the kin of, or even being the close friend of another successful individual, can work in the favor of establishing your initial glorifications.
    2) Grendel is initially defined as a monster and an evil creature spawned from murder itself. His actions later roughly confirm this strong accusation, when he begins killing soldiers in their sleep. He is not sly nor precise about his killings, but very brutal and torturous, demonstrating very little honor or regard for the living men he steals life from. It can be argued that the soldiers instigated the conflict by disrupting Grendel's ears with their music, but regardless of the circumstances, Grendel was the first to draw blood.
    3) God is referenced by Beowulf and the narrator in a few different ways; God, The Almighty, Lord, Lord Almighty, our Father, and the Lord of Heaven and Earth. In the first passage the narrator speaks of poets singing of the creation of earth. The most apparent biblical instance is when the narrator quotes the story of Cain an Abel, as a way to provide an answer to Grendel's existense.
