"The Stranger" blog 7!

Below are some notes for you to read and think about as we progress through the novel:

While many originally thought Camus wrote his prose from only the angle of Existentialism, he himself was not truly an Existentialist. He was actually regarded more as an Absurdist. We see both philsophies in "The Stranger". What is the distinction?

Absurdism
-absurdists like Camus believe that there are no rational for the elements of life
- no redeeming purpose and one cannot make sense of it
-When we die, we die, there is no other solitary purpose,
-belief that our desire for meaning is greater than the capacity of the universe to provide meaning
-we can try all we want to make sense of things, but it's pointless
-human beings live in essential isolation in a meaningless, and irrational world

Existentialism
-
Existentialists hold a belief that there is nothing that is predetermined
-
our choices and actions can determine our lives
-we can make choices within the ethical system we construct
-uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience, indifferent to universe, must make our own meaning
-human existence is unexplainable, but we must take responsibility for the consequences of one's acts.

Chapter one reflection

Meursault appears heartless for failing to express grief or even to care about his mother’s death in chapter one. We shouldn't be so quick to judge him though, or else we risk missing Camus' point. "The Stranger", while it explores the philosophy of the absurd, should not be interpreted as a novel that will teach us a moral lesson. Camus’s philosophy of the absurd sees the world and human beings as having no real purpose or meaning. The universe is indifferent to human struggles, and Meursault's actions and personality embody this philosophy. Meursault does not see any meaning or significance behind his mother's death, it's not part of some higher structure so therefore he's able to continue about his day, observe people, eat regularly, go on a date, have sex and live his seemingly normal existence. This is a difficult notion for us to understand because we are always trying to attach meaning to things. The idea that things happen for no reason and that events sometimes have no meaning can be disruptive to our thinking. Accepting that life is meaningless and there is no reason to live can be cause for a major crisis. What's the point of living if we all die anyway? Existentialists would say that we are responsible for creating that meaning in our lives, while absurdists would ask, "What's the point?"

25 comments:

  1. Chapter 1

    1) Because she showed no signs of being religious before saying she desired a religious burial.

    2) No. Because they do not care about seeing them either way. No, not really.

    3) Paris. 64.

    4) The other people attending the vigil seemed like they were there, but not really. He also said he felt like he was being judged, perhaps foreshadowing?

    5) To reflect on the deceased. One night.

    6) He was very close, maybe even romantically.

    Chapter 2

    1) He lives in an apartment above a restaurant.

    2) He goes out swimming. It shows how he is unmoved by his mother's death.

    3) That his life has not changed since his mother's death.

    Sisyphus

    1) He toils endlessly, but in life his work mattered.

    2) An absurd one.

    3) Nothing will ever change.

    Sisyphus Questions
1.) Sisyphus' life was different from his life in that he was very smart in his life, but in his fate he did grunt work, requiring no intelligence. That sucks. A lot.
2.) This would be a tragic drama because the end is sad. He is forced to work for all eternity. That sucks. A lot.
3.)Being happy for Sisyphus at the end makes no sense. He is sentenced to an eternity of pushing this boulder up a hill. That sucks. A lot.

  3. Chapter 1 Questions:
    1. Because she was never religious until she requested her burial.

    2. He denies the offer to have an open casket. Someone may say this because it may be too much for them, but in this case he really just doesn't care whether it is or not. I find to see Meursault very much like myself, I really wouldn't care to have an open casket. Not because it would be overwhelming but because I really wouldn't like to see any dead body in general.

    3. Paris, he was 64 years old.

    4. He keeps dozing off and his sense become sensitive as he is becoming sleepy.

    5. To mourn over the death of a lost one which in this case lasted one night.

    6. There were very close friends and may possibly have been together as close companions.

    Chapter 2 Questions:
    1. He lives in an apartment in the city. There are a lot of salt references so possibly a city near an ocean.

    2. He spends his Sunday out on his balcony observing people and how they dress and act from all along the city.

    3. He felt as if his life hadn't changed even after his mother's death.

    Sisyphus Questions:
    1. That he now has to do it for an eternity and not just until death.

    2. Possibly an comedy-drama. Because someone who pushes a boulder up and down a hill seems pretty ridiculous as well as the association with Gods.

    3. Because he must endure the fate that he was already doing, and nothing more hence the fact that he was playing trickery with the Gods.

  4. 1. "So I rolled over, tried to find the salty smell Marie's hair had left on the pillow, and then slept until ten." because it said the salty smell of her hair i believe that he lives in a beach like city like our seaside.

    2. after a Sunday that was more unusual than most of his Sundays, Meursault begins another week of work, another week of monotony, doing the robot-like actions that most people perform in order to make a living, the same monotony that Camus despises because of its intoxicating, suffocating effect on the human soul. Meursault, as we see from the beginning of this chapter, is what one might call a "good employee."

    3. Meursault means by that quote that nothing has changed. He must have thought that things had changed at some point.

    1. It goes on forever

    2. It would be a tragedy

    ReplyDelete
  5. 3. because he technically beats his own fate by walking down

  6. 1) This was surprising because when Meusault was a child and growing up his mother never expressed much interest in religion.
    2) He does this because he feels that a person shouldn't been seen in that state and he doesn't understand why anyone would want to view the deceased.
3)The caretaker is from Paris and is sixty four years old.
    4) Meursault see people at his mother vigil incredibly clearly and he felt like he was being watched.
    5) To look and reflect on the deceased's past life and it usually lasts for one night.
    6) Maman was very close and also in an intimate relationship with Parez.

    CHAPTER 2
    1) Meursault says something about living in an apartment above a restaurant.
    2) He goes to a pool which kind of shows that even during a traumatic experience like the one he has gone through he still is able to still be as distant as before.
3)This shows that he is untouched and doesn't feel much even after his mothers death.
    SISYPHUS
    1) that he is just going to do brainless work for the rest of his life.
    2) A very dramatic 90's movie.
    3) He has to keep doing what he already did to repay his debt to the gods.

  7. 1. Because she had never been religious in her lifetime.

    2. He does not give a reason for not wanting to see his mother. Someone way respond in this way because they are unsure about all of the emotions they are experiencing although this does not seem to be the case in this story. It is not normal in my opinion.

    3. The caretaker is from Paris, he is 64.

    4. He didn't seem to care about the situation and he fell asleep. He was woken up by his mother's friends coming back.

    5. It is used to honer the dead. It lasts one day.

    6. He is one of Maman's good friends who was aloud to attend the funeral.

    7. The smell of salt shows he lives near a beach. It also says he lives near the main street in an apartment.

    8. He sits out and smokes for hours while watching people. This shows that he is patient and not bothered by the stresses of life.

    9. His mother's death does not really seem to affect him.

    10. He is forced to do it for eternity and for no meaning.

    11. It would be a tragedy.

    12. Because he is aloud to continue what he was already doing in life.

  8. Chapter 1
    1) it is odd that she wanted a religious burial because she didn't give a thought to religion during her life.

2)No he does not give a reason to why he doesn't want to see the open casket, someone may respond in this way because it may cause them to get extremely emotional and yes i do find this normal because they don't want to get emotional.

3)the caretaker is 64 years old and he is from Paris.

    4) He seemed to have dosed off because of the little interest in the situation and everything seemed more realistic.

5)A vigil is used to honor the dead. it usually lasts about one day.

6)Thomas Perez was one of Maman's oldest best friends

    Chapter 2
    1) he lives in the city somewhere near the ocean/ Beach

2)On Sunday he decides to sit out smoking cigarettes and people watching all day. it shows he is very lackadaisical, passive, and is not stressed by life.

3)To me it seems that he is not really affected by the death of Maman when he says "it occured to me...really, nothing had changed."

    Sisyphus Questions
    1) Now he must work forever for nothing, in life his work at least mattered for something.
    2) It would be a tragedy!
    3) We must be happy for him because he gets to continue doing what he was already doing in life? He got no real ultimate punishment for tricking the gods?

  10. Chapter 1
    1. It was weird that Madam Meursault desired a religious burial because she had never given a thought of religion in her life.

    2. He doesn't give an explanation because he simply does not want to see his mother. Usually people don't want to because it would be an emotional thing for them, but that's not the case for Meursault; he just doesn't want to see her.

    3. The caretaker is from Paris. He is as old as some of the residents at the home. He's 64.

    4. Meursault keeps drifting off to sleep at the vigil because the lights' glare on the wall was making him drowsy.

    5. It was customary to hold a vigil. It's to honor people who have passed. A vigil was held for a day. They can't do it for very long because it gets hot.

    6. Thomas Perez was in love with Maman. The other residents would joke, calling her his fiancee.

    Chapter 2
    1. "My room looks out over the main street in the neighborhood." (21)

2.He chooses to people watch from his balcony all day. It shows that he likes to analyze people and that he has the attention span to sit for 7 or 8 hours just watching.

    3. He never went to visit Maman, so she didn't take up any part of his daily life. He would still go to work just like he used to.

    Sisyphus
1.The time that he walks down from the mountain to get the boulder again, Sisyphus is in charge of his own fate.

2.All the drama would be outside, but perfectly fine inside.

    3. Because he continues on even though he can't see the end.

3.He is from Paris and he is 64
4.All things that he normally did not noticed became very clear to him and he was not able to see anything else
5.The purpose of a vigil is to watch over the dead so they can safely make it into the afterlife. It lasts a full night; the times when you usually sleep.
6.He was her closest friend while she while she was living at the retirement home

    Chapter Two
1.He lives in a room that is on top of a bakery
2.He sits around all day observing the people that watched down the street that his balcony looked over. It shows that he is very observant and likes to learn things from other people
3.It means that even though his mother had just been buried; nothing had really changed for him and it’s just like any other weak for him.

    Sisyphus
1.Now he must work for nothing while in his normal life he was able to accomplish something in his work
2.It would be a tragic drama because he ends up serving an eternity of punishment
3.Because he is still going what he was doing in his normal life so it’s not a real punishment

  12. 1. she was neither religious nor atheists.

    2. it is possible to people who has necrophobia, ro just want to imagine of it. not watching it. but most of people actually want to see their beloved people's body. I think it is pretty normal, however, narrator in the novel, he didn't want to see it, he said "I don't know why." I guess he doesn't love his mother that much.

    3. he's from Paris, he's sixty-four years old.

    4. he watching over Maman and drink some coffee, and the room was so white, somehow those pure whiteness hurt his eyes.

    3. he just got tragic news, so he supposed to be sad in general, but he really doesn't feel anything.

    -------

    1. he is smart enough to trick the god, however, his punishment got nothing to do with his brain.

    2. He would draw Sisyphus as rebellious guy who is being against Greek god Zeus, or destroying himself because of emptiness or non sense of life.

    3. I'm not really happy with it. although he was cheater and break the rule, so he get punished. but I don't feel any catalysis, such as when I found out villain get punished in comics.

  13. 1. Because she never expressed any interest in religion, no one knew that she was religious or had any beliefs whatsoever.
    2. Meursault just says that he doesn’t want to and hopes that the guy won’t judge him, and the man assumes that he doesn’t for regular reasons, not just that he doesn’t care. He responded that way because he’s really weird and abnormal. So no, that is not normal behavior at all.
    3. Paris, France, and he is also 64 years old.
    4. He had just woken up and he could see very well but everything was so bright that it made his head hurt. It seemed like he was going in and out for awhile and then finally went back to the main story.
    5. To watch over the dead is what I heard, and it lasts one day.
    6. Perez was Maman’s best friend in the retirement home, Meursault and him talked for awhile around the place that his mother was laying.

    1. He lives by himself in one room, in an apartment, on top of a bakery.
    2. He stays home and goes out to the balcony, smokes and watches people for hours straight. It shows that he doesn’t have friends or family to be with, no one to hang out with or go do something with. So he most likely doesn’t have the greatest or friendliest personality/character.
    3. That even though she’s not in his life anymore, not much has changed and he doesn’t even notice that something might be different.

  14. 1. It was odd that Madam Meursault desired a religious burial because she never gave a thought to religion.
    2. He doesn't give an explanation as to why he didn't want to see the open casket. He behaves this way because his mother is dead, and he doesn't see any point in starting some crisis. He understands that death is a part of what happens to us. In my opinion, it is not usually seen as normal.
    3. He was 64 and from Paris.
    4. He is remembering the good times he had with his mother.
    5. The vigil's purpose is to honor the dead. It lasts a day.
    6. They were inseparable.

    Chapter 2
    1. He would sit outside and smoke, while watching people, for hours. He talked about salt, meaning he lives near the beach.
    2. He smoked a couple cigarettes and watched people outside. This demonstrates his ability to be content doing almost nothing.
    3. He means that his mother's death did not affect him or change his life for better or worse.

    Sisyphus Questions
    1. He was very clever, but now that he is in trouble, he could no longer showcase his tricking abilities.
    2. There would be satirical humor, but it also wouldn't really matter what he's doing.
    3. Because he knows what fate awaits him.

  15. Chapter 1

    1. It was odd because she wasn't a very religious person, and they thought it wasn't like her to want one of these burials.

    2. He doesn't give an explanation for it he just doesn't want to see his mother’s body. i think its normal behavior because he probably just doesn't want to remember his mother like that.

    3. The caretaker is from Paris, France and is 64 years old.

    4. He takes a day off work to take a bus to his mother’s funeral, where he stays the night at a old persons home. He stays with the body of his mother for the entire night. The only person of the retirement home that attends the funeral is a close person to her named Thomas Perez.

    5. To honor or recognize the life of someone who has passed, and usually lasted all night.

    6. She became a inmate with Perez because Meursault couldn’t afford to take care of her anymore and they both had nothing to say to each other either.

    Chapter 2

    1. In the book it talks about whom he lives on Main Street and it talks about other things in the page that sort of hint he lives probably in the inner city as well.

    2. What he chooses to do on his Sundays is sit on his back balcony is smoke cigarettes and just people watch for hours on end. He also likes to make food.

    3. What I took from what he meant when he said that nothing had changed was that after his mother’s death, nothing in his life had changed, or that his life went on as usual and almost if nothing had happened at all.

    Sisyphus Questions

1.He has to work for eternity for nothing, when he use to actually earn something in his normal life.

    2. It would probably end up a tragic drama because of the work he has to do.
    3. We must be happy for him because he gets to continue on and keep doing what he was doing.

  16. 1. It was odd to see Madam Meursault want a religious burial because she was not religious, and many people did not see her as a deserving religious person.

    2. Meursault tells the caretaker not to open the casket because he does not want to see his mother's dead body. I believe that this is something that differs from person to person, possibly because of the shock or the hurt of someone like that dying. For me personally, I have no idea what I would like to do and I probably would not know until the situation hit me.

    3. The caretaker is 64 years old. He hails from Paris, France.

    4. After Meursault's mother dies, he goes to the funeral and takes the day off work. He goes to an old folk's home after he goes to Marengo on a bus. He stays with the body of his mother all night. Thomas Perez is very close to his mother. He is the only resident at the house the time.

    5. The reason they have a vigil is because it is customary and it lasted for one day.

    6. They had lived together for a while, they stopped when they had nothing left to say to each other and he could not afford to have to be in charge and take care of her anymore. Meursault realizes that Maman had been getting a little of Parez on the side at the end too. It says that they were fiances.

    1. The book says that Meursault lives right on the main street of a neighborhood with families. It talks about streetcars too, so I would have to assume this is inner city.

    2. Meursault decides to smoke cigarettes like a creep in the window all day staring at people, then goes downstairs to buy bread and spaghetti to make some food.

    3. I think that that is supposed to mean that he is back in the swing of things and things are normal somewhat again.

    1. Sisyphus is doomed to keep trying to get the ball up the hill for the rest of his life, but at the same time he was only a mortal so he would not be able to even live forever.

    2. This would be a tragic drama, in my opinion.

    3. If we were for some reason to be happy for him, it would be because if he gets to keep doing the same thing he might become immortal.

  17. Chapter 1 Question:
1.It was odd that Madam Meursault’s desire a religious burial because she wasn’t religious.
2.No, Meursault doesn’t give an explanation as to why he didn’t want to have the casket opened. Because they wouldn’t want to see the person in that state, it is a normal behavior because it would be hard to have your last memory of your loved one in a casket rather than them alive.
3.The caretaker was from Paris and he is 64 years old.
    4. He wakes up in a really bright room all the walls are white which reflects the light making it even brighter. There were about ten women who walked in and sat down on chairs. It was hard to see because the light reflecting the walls were so bright. It also made it difficult to hear. A women broke down and cried. Meursault met all of his Maman’s friends there.
5.Meursault held a vigil for his mother because she died, the vigil lasted all night.
    6.Thomas Perez is Maman’s fiancé.

    Chapter 2 Question:
1.He lives in an apartment by the ocean.
2.He doesn’t want to go to the restaurant because people will ask him about his mom, so he decides to sleep in more and go out at a later time. When he woke up he went out to the balcony and observed people then later goes to the pool and meets an old friend. This shows how he doesn't take his mother’s death as something important.
3.His mother’s death didn’t make much of a difference in his life.

    Sisyphus Questions:
1.The hard work that was put in was put to waste.
2.It would be a farce of tragedy
3.Because he is repaying what he owned.

  18. 1. Some might find it odd that the mother wanted a religious burial. This was on account of the main character stating that she hadn't been religious. I believe she wanted this because she had unnerving doubt, that perhaps religion was real and true.
    2. He basically doesn't care. At first I believed that he might be able to handle it, but it really seems that he doesn't care.
    3. The caretaker comes from Paris, and is 64 years old.
    4. One might describe his experience as if he had been hitten by a flash bomb. The room was bright, everything was clear and crisp, and he couldn't hear anything or anyone.
    5. I really don't know what the purpose of a vigil is. I would guess given the context that it was honoring the dead person/conversing withe mourning family/friends.
    6. Thomas Perez is sort of an aquantance to Mamam that went with her on walks to a village. Most likely they were good friends.

    ch2
    1. He says he didn’t feel like going downstairs and getting bread, which may signify that he either lived above a bakery or store.
    2. He sat on his balcony watching people on the streets for multi hours. This may show that he is a very patient person/observant person.
    3. He may have been meaning that his mother’s death didn’t affect him or his lifestyle.

    1. This is a really weird question. The mere fact that he no longer can con anyone is the difference with his current state and his previous life. Also, his purpose no longer exists, or rather is no longer made invisible by the shadows and mirrors of society.
    2. I really don’t think I know Camus enough to be able to speculate on how he might ‘dramatize’ the tale, however, if I must...
He might make a guy called sisyphus live a life that is ultimately pointless, tasks he does being completely pointless to the reader. Or perhaps he might make a tale about a human who is always attempting to be happy, but something always goes wrong that prevents happiness.
    3. I personally am not happy for sisyphus, I believe that he deserves what he gets, he did bad against the gods, he should have known it would end badly. However, if i must: We can be happy for him because he always manages to get that boulder up to the mountain, even if it falls back down in the end.
